Vitamin D

Is known as the sunshine vitamin as the main source is from sun exposure and does so many things in the body it acts more like a hormone.  Almost everyone is deficient in vitamin D, even in sunny areas like Arizona.  Optimal Vitamin D serum levels are 50-70 ug/mL. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth, in fact 80% of hip fracture cases have deficient vitamin D levels.  Vitamin D has shown to protect against; heart disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes (it actually stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin), and increases immunity. The best food sources of Vitamin D are salmon, sardines, and egg yolks.  It is also fortified in some foods like milk, OJ and some yogurts.

Vitamin B6/Pyridoxine

Vitamin B6 maintains healthy brain function and development, it helps to make serotonin (the happy hormone) and norepinephrine which affect mood.  B6 also helps to make melatonin which is our internal clock and protects against cancer.  Deficiency in B6 are seen in rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease.  This may be because B6 plays a role in digestive health, immune system, muscular system, cardiovascular system, and the nervous system.  B6 helps to reduce menstrual bloating.  An interesting fact about B6 is that it enhances the recall of dreams.  B6 helps break down protein and you may need more in a high protein diet.
